U.S. to unveil battery research centers in Michigan

Washington — The Energy Department is expected to unveil three new "advanced battery hubs" to bring researchers together to develop new battery technologies for electric cars — including two centers in Michigan.The Energy Department will announce that satellite hubs will be located in Holland and on the University of Michigan's campus in Ann Arbor.

The centers will bring university and private sector research together to develop new battery technologies that will reduce the size, weight and cost of batteries for electric cars, and ultimately commercialize new technologies to help advance the industry.

The high cost of batteries is a big reason why the sale of electric cars this year has been far below many projections. For decades, the federal government has partnered with the auto industry to help speed vehicle advancements.

Senate passes amendment on benefits for first responders killed or injured

The Senate approved an amendment to the defense bill Wednesday evening that would reform a federal benefit for first responders and their families.

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) introduced amendment 2955, which clarifies who qualifies for the federal death and disability benefit for first responders killed or disabled in the line of duty. The amendment, which passed on an 85-11 vote, was based on the bill the Dale Long Public Safety Officers' Benefits Improvements Act of 2012.

Despite affecting the Justice Department instead of the Defense Department, Leahy said the amendment was important because it helps take care of families of all first responders by clarifying existing benefits.
