Michigan, Canada Strike $3.4 Billion Detroit Bridge Deal


Michigan and Canada agreed to build a second bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, to compete with the Ambassador crossing that has connected the two cities since 1929.
The New International Trade Crossing will bolster Michigan’s $70 billion-a-year trade with Canada, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Governor Rick Snyder said today at a press conference in Windsor. Construction costs are estimated to be between C$3.5 billion ($3.4 billion) and C$4 billion, and the project will create 10,000 to 15,000 jobs in Ontario and Michigan, according to documents provided to reporters.

Transgender Workers Now Protected from Discrimination Nationwide



An April 20 Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ruling that covers transgender individuals under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act went into effect late last month, providing transgender Americans for the first time with recourse when denied employment or fired on the basis of their gender identity. Whether in Vermont or Georgia, transgender employees who face discrimination will now have the option to file a complaint with the federal office.

Cuomo Sets Deal to Overhaul NY Prescription-Drug Controls



New York Governor Andrew Cuomo struck a deal with legislative leaders on enhanced prescription-drug tracking to improve distribution controls and curb abuse.
The measure will make New York one of the first U.S. states to require the use of an electronic system to prescribe almost all controlled substances, helping physicians and pharmacists to identify patients who try to see multiple doctors to get the same drug, according to a statement today from Cuomo’s office.
