What 40 Dollars Means To You

Obama 2012 Budget :: Pentagon Plan Would Save $75 billion Over 5 Years

The Pentagon says it will save $75 billion over the next five years by reorganizing its investment spending, according to spending figures for the fiscal 2013 budget proposal released Feb. 13.

A large part of those savings, $15.1 billion, would come from reorganizing the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program.

Another $13.1 billion would come from reducing the Navy’s shipbuilding plans, $4.3 billion from delaying the SSBN(X) Ohio-class replacement submarine, and $2.5 billion from canceling Northrop Grumman Block-30 Global Hawk purchases.

California hits wind energy milestone: About 5 percent of power from wind

The majority of California's electricity - 42 percent - comes from natural gas, followed by nuclear power and hydropower. According to 2010 figures from the California Energy Commission, wind made up 4.7 percent of the state's electricity mix and solar was 0.3 percent.

But in 2011, wind projects that generate 921 megawatts - enough electricity for more than 400,000 homes - were installed across the state, which the wind association says should put it above the long-sought-after 5 percent threshold. California has set an ambitious goal of getting 33 percent of its power from by 2020, and utilities are increasingly signing contracts for renewable projects.
"2011 was a banner year for wind generation in California," said Nancy Rader, executive director of CalWEA, based in Berkeley. "Wind has come a long way and is helping to drive California closer to reaching its goal of 33 percent renewable energy."

Chrysler workers to get first profit-sharing checks since 2005

Chrysler's hourly workers will get profit-sharing checks of about $1,500 each -- their first since 2005 -- after the company reported a $225-million fourth-quarter profit to cap its first profitable year since 2005.
"This is a reward that you have earned," CEO Sergio Marchionne said in an e-mail to Chrysler workers Wednesday. "Your efforts rewrote the history that so many naysayers had forecast."
The Auburn Hills automaker achieved its profit with a string of more compelling vehicles such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango, Chrysler 200 and 300 that have sold in larger quantities and at higher prices.

Alzheimer's research to get big U.S. funding boost

Washington -- The Obama administration announced plans Tuesday to dramatically boost funding for research into Alzheimer's disease. Administration officials said the president would propose an additional $80 million in research funding next year, up from about $450 million this year.

The president will also call for another $26 million in funding to help support families and others who care for Americans suffering from the disease.
