The first hybrid electric street sweepers in the nation are hitting the streets of Manhattan thanks to $690,000 of Recovery funding. Initiating a pilot program, a total of five of the new vehicles were delivered to the New York City Department of Sanitation this past fall.

The White House announced an initiative on Thursday to help create as many as 250,000 summer jobs and internships for low-income youth in 2012.
The program, which is being dubbed Summer Jobs +, is a private-federal government partnership and has already drawn commitments from several companies and federal agencies to hire 180,000 youth next summer. President Obama had proposed a summer jobs program for young people in his American Jobs Act that failed to win congressional approval.
"America's young people face record unemployment, and we need to do everything we can to make sure they've got the opportunity to earn the skills and a work ethic that come with a job," Obama said in a statement announcing the program. "It's important for their future, and for America's."
