U.S. to unveil battery research centers in Michigan

Washington — The Energy Department is expected to unveil three new "advanced battery hubs" to bring researchers together to develop new battery technologies for electric cars — including two centers in Michigan. The Energy Department will announce that satellite hubs will be located in Holland and on the University of Michigan's campus in Ann Arbor.

The centers will bring university and private sector research together to develop new battery technologies that will reduce the size, weight and cost of batteries for electric cars, and ultimately commercialize new technologies to help advance the industry.

The high cost of batteries is a big reason why the sale of electric cars this year has been far below many projections. For decades, the federal government has partnered with the auto industry to help speed vehicle advancements.
