Posted by Linda H on 6:30:00 AM
Yes, there is a Santa Claus. In his Macomb Township neighborhood, he is known as Mike Chase, but to the hundreds of men, women and children living in the Mound Road Housing Projects of Detroit, he is and always shall be Santa C.
"He's a big man with a heart as big as his frame," said friend Mike Leon. "He’s a definite Type A personality with a great sense of humor and just a passion for helping these people."Twenty years ago, Chase brought his first bag of stuffed toys to the children of the projects, and now as he drives a 25-foot U-Haul filled with clothes, food and toys to that same location. Chase, 51, says, “I know I can’t stop, and I never will, because they rely on me for a Christmas.”

Nine states will get federal grants from a $500 million program to boost education standards for preschool programs, the Obama administration said.
California, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Washington will receive the funds from the Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge, a competition to reward states that create plans to set higher standards for preschools and to expand and improve their staffs.
The states were chosen based on their applications and available funds, which will help all early learning programs such as Head Start and public pre-kindergarten.

By Lauren on As the last American troops head home from Iraq, Marianne, a retired teacher in New York, is thinking about her students.
"To me, approaching the end of the war means that my students aren't going off to die in harm's way. I've already lost two students in Iraq and had to comfort younger siblings after their deaths. I had former students who were deployed overseas with the Marines. I hope I will get to see them come home safe and sound to join their families."
