Bill banning insider trading advances in Senate over GOP opposition

A Senate committee easily cleared legislation explicitly prohibiting members from profiting by trading on inside information, despite objections from some GOP lawmakers who called it unnecessary and politically motivated.

Backers of the bill agreed that lawmakers are already subject to the same insider-trading laws everyone else must follow, but maintained that it was a worthwhile exercise to make it explicit in statute that such practices are prohibited. A November “60 Minutes” report suggested that several high-ranking members of Congress might have profited personally from information obtained in the halls of Congress.

TARP turns $13 Billion Profit

With the reimbursement of $210 million of bailout money by Bank of Kentucky Financial Corp. and First Midwest Bancorp Inc., the U.S. Treasury has recovered nearly $258 billion from the bailed out banks. Approximately $245 billion was given to these banks as part of their participation in the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) during the latest recession. The amount was procured through repayments, interest, dividends and other income, enabling the Treasury to make a profit of about $13 billion.

Method’s Plastic Madness: Ocean Trash To Detergent Bottles

As you may have heard, there’s a soupy mix of plastic trash swirling in the North Pacific Ocean near Hawaii. This so-called Great Pacific Garbage Patch has grown over the years as we use and throw away ever more disposable stuff. Meanwhile, we keep cranking out virgin plastic (made from oil, by the way).
