The Virtual Nurse Will See You Now

Meet Elizabeth, your virtual nurse. She can tell you what medication to take, and when to take it. She can raise her eyebrows to emphasize words, and she can show empathy. And, to make you feel at ease, she can even ask you questions like "Are you a Red Sox fan?"

One of a growing band of "relational agents" that act as stand-ins for front-line staff, Elizabeth is designed to help with the discharge process at hospitals. She was developed by computer scientists at Northeastern University (hence the Red Sox question), and trialed at Boston Medical Center. Following commercialization by a startup in San Francisco, she could soon be appearing in hospitals around the country.

New Nevada law spurs big drop in homes entering foreclosure

The number of Nevada homes entering foreclosure in October fell 75%, even as the rate surged elsewhere in the nation, largely because of a state law that gets tough on companies doing the foreclosing.

That news, though, did not result from a reversal of fortune in the Nevada housing market. It was spawned by a new Nevada law that plays hardball with companies doing the foreclosing.

Assembly Bill 284, which took effect in October, requires those foreclosing on a home to file an affidavit proving they have the right to bring the action — and it increases civil and criminal penalties for using fraudulent documents in a foreclosure.

Volunteers Across America: Arkansas

My name is Jan Paschal. I'm a proud Democrat and a volunteer with Obama for America in northeastern Arkansas.

I have been involved in Democratic politics for as long as I can remember. I worked for President Clinton in the Department of Education, and since then have been especially involved with women's issues. I recently had the honor of being named National Federation of Democratic Women Person of the Year. The minute Barack Obama won the nomination in 2008, I was excited about what we would be able to accomplish and I was 100 percent ready to work to get him elected.
