Daily Pledge

From Jackie Grumacker

Since this is the official start of the year before election, I’m going to make a pledge that I will try hard to keep every day.

First, I will try not to give into the negative energy of useless outrage. If somebody says or does something stupid, which tends to enrage me, I will either send another donation to the president or work another hour recruiting more supporters. Letting myself feel anger all day and losing sleep won’t help the president.

Second, I will try not to give to despair (different from anger and even more dispiriting) on days that seem bleak. Throughout all the lows in 2008, I kept telling myself and anyone who would listen, “Trust him” (Barack Obama) and it worked. That will be my mantra this year and I will also add that I trust all of us. Every R and his great uncle will be trying to discourage us and divide us. That will be their daily mission. My mission is not to let that happen. I can’t control the world, but I can control my own actions.

Third, I will keep informed of “facts” not suppositions so that I can counter all the wackiness that people try to present to undermine the president. Keep informed and you won’t be caught flat-footed and tongue-tied by the bashers you meet face-to-face.

I’m sure there ‘ll be some backsliding on my resolutions. But I’m relying on the TOD family and all PBO supporting friends and family to keep our minds focused, our courage high and our eyes on the prize.

Most powerful US nuclear bomb dismantled

The last of the nation's most powerful nuclear bombs has been taken apart in Texas. Technicians at the Pantex Plant near Amarillo removed the uranium Tuesday from the last of the nation's largest nuclear bombs, a Cold War relic known as the B53.

Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman watched workers take the bomb apart. He says it's "a milestone accomplishment" and a step toward President Barack Obama's mission to rid the world of nuclear weapons.

Banks Start to Make More Loans

By ERIC DASH and BEN PROTESS

On Monday, Citigroup officials said the bank recorded loan growth, compared with a year ago, in almost every one of its businesses during the third quarter, and in almost every corner of the globe. Wells Fargo executives said new loan commitments to small businesses were up 8 percent, while lending to bigger companies has been growing for 14 months in a row. Across the industry, analysts expect credit card loan balances will start increasing before the end of the year.
“The narrative that banks aren’t lending is incorrect,” Timothy J. Sloan, Wells Fargo’s chief financial officer, said in an interview. “Lending is strong, and based on what we’re seeing,” he added, it will “continue to grow.”
