Hiker helping vets gets hero's welcome in Louisville

Troy Yocum led the entourage that included family, friends and supporters who met him at Louisville Slugger Field to walk to the big bat at the Louisville Slugger Museum. There, in April 2010, he’d begun his hike to raise money and awareness for struggling military families.
Yocum completed his walk of about 7,800 miles around the country Saturday and raised $500,000 for military families, with more funds expected to be announced later this month.

Converting Plastic Back To The Oil It Came From

It's one thing to make plastic from petroleum--that's pretty standard. It's another to reverse the process, and refuel your car with old plastic trash.

That's one application for what the city of Akron, Ohio, is planning to do with its brand new facility built by Greenstar Recycling and Vadxx Energy. Vadxx manufactures synthetic crude oil and natural gas by using raw material feedstock from petroleum-based plastics. The process--called thermal depolymerization--can actually create a small domestic oil supply, as well as natural gas. The company is not picky: Feedstocks include auto fluff, e-wastes, scrap tires, recyclable and non-recyclable plastics, synthetic fibers, used industrial solvents, waste oil, and heavy refinery bottom oil.

New Rules Protect Consumers From Insurance Industry Abuse

Here's an occurrence that was far too common over the last few years: you open a letter from your insurance company, and it says your premiums are going up 25 or even 50 percent. There's no explanation why. There's nothing you can do. You either need to find thousands of dollars in your family's yearly budget or risk losing your health coverage.

Until now, insurers could get away with these exorbitant, unexplained premium hikes because the rules were stacked in their favor. They had all the information. They had limited competition. And in many states, there was little oversight or accountability.
