Localize It: Podponics Grows High-Tech Organic Produce In Shipping Containers

As fuel prices go up, the cost of shipping produce thousands of miles away rises accordingly. In the past few years, a number of companies have attempted to capitalize on the increasing hunger for locally produced food--we've seen rooftop farming startup BrightFarms and Brooklyn hydroponic farming startup Gotham Greens, just to a name a couple.

PodPonics, an Atlanta-based company started by a former software programmer, thinks it can outgrow them all. The company is already well on its way. Last week, PodPonics announced that it raised $725,000 in a seed funding round led by private investors.

Chrysler to add 1,100 jobs at Toledo plant

Chrysler is marching forward with plans to add more than 1,100 jobs at a Toledo assembly plant by 2013 despite a rocky U.S. economy that has whipsawed investors this past week.

The Auburn Hills automaker is planning to invest about $365 million at its Jeep Liberty and Dodge Nitro SUV plant, city documents show. Experts say the investment is for the next-generation Liberty based on a Fiat platform. However, the plans depend on the approval of tax incentives by Toledo and two school districts.
"This project is ... going to put many of the parents of our students to work," said Bob Vasquez, board president for Toledo Public Schools, who will vote on the tax proposal Tuesday.

Cost of Medicare's Part D drug plan is dropping

Even as health costs continue to rise, Medicare beneficiaries will see the average price of a Part D drug plan decline slightly next year, the Obama administration announced Thursday, offering some relief amid pressure to cut the federal health insurance program for the elderly.

The Part D drug benefit, allows seniors and others on Medicare to sign up for a privately administered, government-subsidized health plan to get their prescriptions. Popular with beneficiaries, the program has also proven far less costly than budget analysts originally expected, in part because of competition among private plans and the growing use of less expensive generic drugs.
