Historic Changes in Women’s Health Care

Fewer women will have to make the choice between their physical and financial health, thanks to historic new guidelines the Department of Health and Human Services announced last week. By August of next year, HIV screenings, contraception, domestic violence screening, and other services must be available under all new insurance plans—without a co-payment or deductible—under the Affordable Care Act.

Comcast Announces $10 Web Access For Low-Income Families

Cable and Internet provider Comcast is launching a new initiative aimed at bridging the digital divide, offering discounted web access and home computers to families that meet income requirements.

The plan, called Internet Essentials, will be available wherever Comcast offers Internet services — which it currently does in 39 states. The company has launched websites in English and Spanish to promote the program.

As you may recall, Comcast acquired NBC Universal earlier this year. In approving the merger, regulators also required the company to help low-income households get online. It seems that Comcast can afford the new program: when it reported earnings this week, its revenue had risen 51 percent, to $14.3 billion.

Health IT Training Creates New Careers

Sherri Stuart has been a physician assistant for the last 30 years. She didn’t expect her career to dramatically change, but this spring she got a new job with substantial increases in pay and responsibility, thanks to her enrollment in a new health information technology (IT) training program.

The practice where she worked began using an electronic health record (EHR) system six years ago, and Stuart was impressed by the system’s potential to improve quality, reduce redundancy, and increase access to care. Through a contact at her local Regional Extension Center (REC), Stuart heard about a scholarship opportunity to learn more about health informatics at the University of Colorado Denver’s Health Information Technology program Exit Disclaimer, and after one semester of classes, she was recruited for a new position managing the clinical applications and workflow of four outpatient hospital clinics’ EHR implementation.
