New York Start-Ups Ride Tech Boom

It's official: The Internet gold rush is spreading east. A decade after the tech bubble burst and brought down Silicon Alley, investors are crowding back into New York's start-up scene, pumping funds into companies like fashion website Gilt Groupe Inc., which now commands a $1 billion valuation, private-company trading system SecondMarket Inc. and location-based networking business Foursquare Labs Inc.

The flood of money is encouraging would-be entrepreneurs to ditch Wall Street or Madison Avenue careers to set up companies in New York-centric industries such as fashion, retail, finance and media. Those businesses, in turn, are having an impact far beyond the city itself.

Stimulus: Residents of San Mateo County Major Saving $$

Obtaining a home energy upgrade is increasingly affordable in California, thanks to an array of financial incentives and rebates. In fact, residents in the County of San Mateo can take advantage of up to $4,000 per household, made available through the California Energy Commission’s Department of Energy’s State Energy Program.

The County of San Mateo has also used nearly $110,000 from their Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant to get the word out about these rebates through local governments and non-profits. These partners are then educating and engaging specific populations at the local level, a strategy known as community-based social marketing.

Citi, Google to invest $110 million in wind energy project

Google Inc and Citigroup Inc will each invest $55 million in Terra-Gen Power's 102 megawatt Alta IV project in California, the companies said. Renewable energy developer Terra-Gen Power is constructing the 1,550 MW Alta Wind Energy Center(AWEC) project in several phases, five of which have been completed.

The project is slated to be one of the largest sites in the United States for wind energy generation -- enough to power 450,000 homes.
