Michigan Embraces First Lady’s “Chefs Move to Schools” Initiative

Photo credit: Patty Russo.In March 2011, USDA Special Nutrition Programs Regional Director Julie Mikkelson and I met Chef Paul Penney at a HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) award celebration in Canton, Michigan. Chef Paul, a volunteer with the First Lady’s Chefs Move to Schools initiative, was in the kitchen at Dodson Elementary School helping school foodservice staff prepare mashed sweet potatoes and apples and Michigan cherry chili.

Both dishes, recipes he created for the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, were making their debut at Dodson that day. At the lunchroom entrance, Chef Paul greeted each student and handed out 2 ounce “tasting cups” of the chili and the sweet potatoes. (He credits Plymouth-Canton foodservice director Kristen Hennessey with the idea.)

Bringing Chinese Manufacturing Jobs to the U.S.

Most Americans think U.S. manufacturing is a lost cause. And a lot of the blame for that is put on China. But Pin Li, President of the Wanxiang America Corporation, has other ideas. His Chicago-based subsidiary of the Chinese manufacturing firm is busy snapping up flailing American manufacturers to turn them into profitable ventures that sell their American-made wares back into China. I caught up with Pin in New York to talk about what his business means for U.S. jobs and the U.S. economy.

Macy's reports profit surge in first quarter

Buoyed by robust sales including a major boost online, department store giant Macy's Inc. reported solid first-quarter results, including a surge in profit.

Sales totaled $5.89 billion, a 5.7% increase over the same quarter a year earlier. Same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least a year, were up 5.4%. Online sales surged 38.3%, the company said.
