Stimulus: Chicago Will Pay Cab Companies to Go Green

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley launched a new Green Taxi Program Friday that will encourage the taxi industry to purchase cost-effective hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles. More green cabs will help the city move closer to reaching carbon emission goals set out in its Chicago Climate Action Plan, while also improving air quality.

The funding comes from a Clean Cities grant from the US Department of Environment, through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

U.S. Offers $2.1 Billion Backing for World's Largest Solar Power Plant

The U.S. offered a $2.1 billion loan guarantee to help Solar Trust of America LLC build the world’s largest solar-energy generating station in Southern California. The project will have two units that combined will produce 484 megawatts of electricity to be transported over an eight- mile transmission line near Blythe, California, about 230 miles (370 kilometers) east of Los Angeles, according to an Energy Department statement. The U.S. guarantee will help build these units in the first phase of the project.
“This is the largest amount offered to a solar project through the loans program office,” Energy Secretary Steven Chu said today on a conference call.

One Million Free CDs and Movies for U.S. Troops Serving Overseas

CNN) -- Five years ago, to show her gratitude for U.S. troops serving overseas, teenager Kaylee Radzyminski started sending them donated CDs and DVDs. The project grew into her nonprofit, Tunes 4 the Troops, and she was recognized as a CNN Hero in 2008. At the time, she and her team had collected and shipped 200,000 discs.

This week, Tunes 4 the Troops celebrated a major milestone when it prepared its 1 millionth disc for shipment.
