The Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER) announced a new federally-funded program, “Smart Building: High Performance Homes,” which will train Massachusetts builders to use thermal imaging-enhanced building assessments to boost the energy efficiency of Massachusetts homes.
The US Department of Energy (DOE) awarded the Commonwealth $350,000 to fund activities that improve energy performance of Massachusetts buildings, including the Smart Building training. Massachusetts is among 24 states sharing $7 million in US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Building Energy Codes program, which, according to the DOE, has dramatically reduced energy use and carbon pollution and saved an estimated $16 billion for US consumers since its start 20 years ago.

Veterans dealing with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder can turn to their smartphones for help any time with the “PTSD Coach” application created by the Veterans Affairs and Defense departments.PTSD Coach lets users track their symptoms, links them with local sources of support, provides accurate information and helpful individualized strategies for managing symptoms, officials said. The app is now available for download from the iTunes Store and will be available for Android devices by the end of the spring.
“This is about giving veterans and service members the help they earned when and where they need it,” Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric K. Shinseki said. “We hope they, their families and friends download this free app. Understanding PTSD and those who live with it is too important to ignore.”

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced today $30 million in funding for a second round of Promise Neighborhoods grants to be divided between a new set of planning grants and implementation grants.
The U.S. Department of Education launched the Promise Neighborhoods program in April 2010 as the first federal initiative to put education at the center of comprehensive efforts to fight poverty in urban and rural areas. That year, the Department awarded $10 million to 21 applicants for their efforts to support one year planning of cradle-to-career services designed to improve educational outcomes for students in distressed neighborhoods. The Department received 339 applications from more than 300 communities across 48 states and the District of Columbia. In September, 21 grants of up to $500,000 were awarded to nonprofit organizations and institutions of higher education working throughout a diverse set of communities, including major metropolitan areas, small and medium-size cities, rural areas, and one Indian reservation.
