Algae oil could reduce U.S. oil imports

Raceway algae ponds in Southern California. The U.S. has enough land in the right climate to produce homegrown algae oil that would replace a significant amount of foreign oil imported for transportation use--without endangering its water supply.

The Gulf Coast region, the Southeastern seaboard, and the Great Lakes areas are ideally suited to grow algae in outdoor freshwater ponds with minimal water usage.

Job openings reach 2-year high

American companies are advertising more job openings than at any time in the last two years, suggesting that April will mark a third straight month of strong hiring.

The 3.1 million job openings posted in February, up from 2.7 million in January, indicate that businesses are gaining more confidence in the U.S. economy. People are spending more, buying furniture, clothes and electronics and eating out. That raises corporate revenue.
"We've turned the corner in terms of job growth," said Scott Brown, chief economist at Raymond James. "Unfortunately there's this big cloud of higher gasoline prices hanging over everything."
