Stimulus: 90,000 square miles of western Alaska gains 4G high-speed broadband

Hooper Bay village Corporation wins a $25.3 million grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) broadband grant and loan programs, according to a written statement from Sen. Mark Begich.

Rivada Sea Lion, LLC, a village corporation of Hooper Bay, will leverage the money with $6.4 million of its own funds for its Southwestern Alaska Broadband Rural Expansion (SABRE) project.

The corporation will use the money, earned through a competitive grant process, for 4G high-speed broadband internet service availability to cover a 90,000 square mile area in Western Alaska. They will serve an estimated 29,000 rural residents in 53 villages.

Swedish City Cuts Fossil Fuel Use - Turns to Potato Peels

KRISTIANSTAD, Sweden - the city and surrounding county, with a population of 80,000, essentially use no oil, natural gas or coal to heat homes and businesses, even during the long frigid winters. It is a complete reversal from 20 years ago, when ALL of their heat came from fossil fuels.

This area in southern Sweden, best known as the home of Absolut vodka, has not  substituted solar panels or wind turbines for the traditional fuels it has forsaken. Instead, as befits a region that is an epicenter of farming and food processing, it generates energy from a motley assortment of ingredients like potato peels, manure, used cooking oil, stale cookies and pig intestines.
